Sherwin-Williams Emerald Paint Review: Why It’s One of Our Go-To Premium Coatings

When people ask us what the “best” paint is, our answer isn’t always as simple as naming the most expensive product on the shelf.

Different projects call for different coatings.

At Brush & Pride Painting, we don’t really believe in a good, better, best approach where every customer is simply choosing between three levels of quality. Our philosophy is closer to good or better. We want to start with a quality coating appropriate for the application, and then step up when the project calls for greater durability, performance, or longevity.

And when we’re looking for that higher level of performance, Sherwin-Williams Emerald® is one of our go-to product families.

We regularly use Emerald Interior, Emerald Exterior, Emerald Rain Refresh®, and Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel. It isn’t necessary for every painting project, but when we’re restoring a home or looking for a long-lasting premium finish, Emerald is frequently at the top of our list.

Is Sherwin-Williams Emerald Worth It?

In our experience as professional painters: yes, when the application justifies it.

Emerald is positioned by Sherwin-Williams as one of its premium coating lines, and we’ve found its performance to justify that position.

But that doesn’t mean everyone needs Emerald.

A quality repaint in a relatively low-wear area may perform perfectly well with another professional-grade coating. Spending more money on paint simply because it’s more expensive doesn’t automatically produce a better painting project.

Where Emerald starts making more sense is when durability, washability, long-term appearance, and overall finish quality are priorities.

That’s why it has become one of the products we use extensively.

Emerald Interior Paint

Sherwin-Williams Emerald Interior Acrylic Latex is one of our preferred choices for premium interior painting.

Sherwin-Williams rates Emerald Interior for exceptional hide, coverage, durability, and washability. It also offers resistance to stains, water spotting, scrubbing, and burnishing—the shiny or polished-looking areas that can sometimes develop when painted walls are repeatedly rubbed or cleaned.

Those characteristics matter in real homes.

Hallways get touched. Kids’ rooms get dirty. Living spaces get bumped. Walls get wiped down. A beautiful finish on the day the painters leave is important, but we’re equally interested in how that finish performs afterward.

That’s one of the reasons we’re comfortable using Emerald when long-term durability is an important part of the project.

Emerald Exterior Paint

On the exterior, the demands placed on paint are completely different.

Sunlight, moisture, temperature changes, mildew, dirt, and general weather exposure continually work against the coating.

Emerald Exterior Acrylic Latex is formulated to resist blistering, peeling, fading, and dirt pickup while providing a mildew-resistant coating. It’s also self-priming on appropriate properly prepared surfaces and is backed by Sherwin-Williams’ limited lifetime warranty.

We’ve used Emerald Exterior extensively, and it has become one of our go-to exterior coatings when we’re looking for premium performance and longevity.

Preparation still matters tremendously. No premium paint can compensate for rotten wood, moisture problems, failed substrates, or poor preparation.

But once we’ve done the work necessary to create a sound surface, Emerald is a coating we’re very comfortable putting over it.

What About Emerald Rain Refresh?

We’ve previously written about Emerald Rain Refresh, and it’s another product we really like.

Rain Refresh takes the Emerald exterior platform a step further with Sherwin-Williams’ Self-Cleaning Technology™, which is formulated to shed dirt when it comes into contact with rain or water. It also provides UV and weather protection designed to maintain the exterior’s appearance.

For the right home and the right project, Rain Refresh is an excellent option.

But standard Emerald Exterior shouldn’t be overlooked. It’s a premium exterior coating in its own right and remains a product we use regularly.

Emerald Urethane for Cabinets, Doors and Trim

There’s another member of the Emerald family that deserves its own mention: Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel.

We use Emerald Urethane on cabinetry and other applications where we want a harder, smoother enamel finish.

Cabinets are fundamentally different from walls. Cabinet doors and drawers are constantly being touched, opened, closed, wiped, and cleaned. They need a coating system appropriate for that kind of use.

Sherwin-Williams designed Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel to provide the smooth, uniform appearance associated with traditional oil-based enamels while using a water-based formula.

When we’re refinishing cabinets, Emerald Urethane is one of the products we regularly trust for the finished coating system.

When We Choose Emerald

One of the mistakes homeowners can make when researching paint is assuming that the highest-tier product is automatically necessary for every surface in the house.

We don’t believe that’s true.

There are applications where another quality paint is completely appropriate. Our job as painters isn’t simply to sell the most expensive gallon of paint available. It’s to match the coating system to the project.

But there are also projects where longevity and durability are part of the objective from the beginning.

Historic restorations are a good example.

When we’re putting significant time into preparation—scraping, sanding, repairing, priming, restoring substrates, and correcting years of deterioration—the finish coat becomes a relatively small part of a much larger investment.

That’s not where we want to save a few dollars on material.

If we’re going through the effort to properly restore something, Emerald is often where we turn for the finish.

Our “Good or Better” Approach to Paint

You may have heard contractors describe their paint selections as good, better, and best.

We look at it a little differently.

At Brush & Pride Painting, our starting point should already be a quality professional coating. We aren’t interested in creating a low-end option by reducing the quality of the materials simply to hit a cheaper price.

From there, we determine whether the project warrants stepping up.

That’s our good or better philosophy.

For a straightforward repaint, a quality professional paint may be exactly what the project needs.

For a restoration, high-use interior, premium exterior, cabinetry project, or another application where we’re prioritizing long-term durability and finish performance, we may move into the Emerald family.

It’s about selecting the right coating for the expected performance—not simply putting the most expensive paint everywhere.

Emerald and Our You’re in Good Hands Guarantee

Our coating selection also changes when Brush & Pride is taking on a greater long-term commitment to the finished project.

Projects that qualify for our You’re in Good Hands Guarantee, including our lifetime-warranty work, aren’t treated like ordinary repaints.

When we’re putting our name behind the longevity of the work at that level, we’re also going to use coating systems we’re comfortable standing behind.

For qualifying interior and cabinet applications under that guarantee, Emerald products are part of the finish systems we trust.

That doesn’t mean the paint alone creates a lifetime-quality job.

It doesn’t.

Preparation, repairs, primers, application methods, environmental conditions, and the condition of the underlying substrate all matter. Premium paint applied over poor preparation is still poor workmanship.

The coating is the final component of an entire system.

And when we’re building that system for longevity, Emerald is frequently our choice.

Our Final Take on Sherwin-Williams Emerald

Sherwin-Williams Emerald isn’t necessary for every painting project.

But it is one of the product families we use most often when we’re looking for premium performance, durability, and a finish designed to last.

We use Emerald Interior on premium interior projects. We use Emerald Exterior and Emerald Rain Refresh on exterior projects. And we use Emerald Urethane when we’re refinishing cabinets and other surfaces that call for an enamel.

It’s not a product we recommend simply because it’s at the upper end of Sherwin-Williams’ lineup.

We recommend it because we’ve used it.

We’ve seen how it applies. We’ve seen the finished product. And we’ve trusted it on projects where we’re putting significant time into preparation and restoration.

For us, that’s ultimately what makes a premium paint worth using.

The most expensive paint isn’t automatically the right paint.

But when the project calls for top-of-the-line performance, Sherwin-Williams Emerald is one of the first places we look.
