Before You Paint It: What Little Rock Homeowners Should Know About Brick, Cabinets & Architectural Details
Paint is one of the fastest ways to transform a home. But here’s something you probably don’t expect to hear from a painting contractor:
Not everything needs to be painted.
At Brush & Pride Painting, we work on homes throughout Little Rock and Central Arkansas, and sometimes the best advice we can give a homeowner is to put the paintbrush down.
Before you paint that brick, cover those wood cabinets, or turn every architectural detail the same shade of white, let’s talk.
Thinking About Painting Your Brick? Read This First.
Painted brick is having a moment. Done well, it can completely transform a home’s exterior.
Done incorrectly, it can create a very expensive problem.
Brick and masonry naturally interact with moisture, and the wrong coating can restrict the ability of water vapor to escape. When moisture becomes trapped behind an incompatible coating, homeowners can eventually encounter peeling paint, efflorescence, deteriorating mortar, and damaged brick.
In other words, choosing a brick color is the fun part. Choosing the right coating system is the important part.
Depending on the brick, its condition, and the look you’re trying to achieve, a professional painting contractor may recommend limewash, masonry stain, a mineral-based coating, or another breathable masonry coating instead of conventional exterior house paint.
Some brick shouldn’t be painted at all.
Before hiring someone for brick painting in Little Rock, ask what product they intend to use and why it’s appropriate for your particular masonry.
Your painter should understand the surface they’re coating—not just know how to change its color.
Before You Paint Those Cabinets, Look at the Wood
Here’s another trend we’re ready to challenge:
Wood cabinets don’t automatically need to be painted just because the stain looks dated.
Those orange-toned cabinets from twenty years ago? Or beautiful woodwork buried underneath an overly dark stain?
There may be another option.
Professional cabinet refinishing can include stripping, toning, recoloring, and refinishing wood to create a lighter, warmer, more neutral, or contemporary appearance while keeping the natural grain visible.
Sometimes painting cabinets is absolutely the right choice. We love a beautiful painted cabinet finish.
But good wood deserves a second look before we cover it.
And while we’re talking cabinetry: can we please stop pretending MDF and solid wood are interchangeable? There. We said it.
Stop Painting Every Architectural Detail the Same Color
Little Rock has some beautiful architecture, particularly throughout its older and historic neighborhoods. Trim. Crown molding. Built-ins. Mantels. Doors. Porch details. Columns. Millwork.
Those details are opportunities—not inconveniences.
For years, interior design moved toward making everything quieter: gray walls, white trim, neutral cabinets, neutral floors, neutral everything.
There’s nothing inherently wrong with a neutral home. But somewhere along the way, we started confusing neutral with timeless.
They’re not necessarily the same thing.
A house with enough architectural character may support a seven-, eight-, or even nine-color palette throughout the property. Color can highlight craftsmanship, create hierarchy between architectural elements, and give individual rooms their own personality while still creating a cohesive home.
Character isn’t coming back into style. Character never went out of style.
Your Home Doesn’t Need to Look Like Everyone Else’s
Great interior painting and exterior painting aren’t simply about following whatever color is trending this year.
They’re about understanding the architecture, understanding the materials, and then making intentional choices.
Maybe that means limewashing the brick instead of painting it.
Maybe it means refinishing beautiful wood cabinets instead of covering them.
Maybe it means painting the front door a color you absolutely love—even if Instagram hasn’t declared it the color of the year.
Your home should feel like your home.
At Brush & Pride Painting, that’s how we approach painting and refinishing projects throughout Little Rock and Central Arkansas: understand what we’re working with first, then determine the best way to make it beautiful.
Because sometimes the smartest painting decision is knowing what not to paint.
